Distinguish, differentiate, compare and explain what is the difference between asteroid and meteor.

Difference between asteroid and meteor

In space, there are various different objects revolving around different stars and planets. All have their own properties and vary and function accordingly. Let’s study here some and find out the difference between asteroid and meteor.

Although there can sometimes be a blurry line between behavior the following descriptions should help you to understand the difference between comets and asteroids. Also, let us know why Halley’s Comet is not a meteorite and more here.

Difference between asteroid and meteor

Comet
A comet orbits the Sun and is a relatively small solar system body. When a comet is close enough to the Sun it displays a visible coma (a fuzzy outline or atmosphere due to solar radiation) and sometimes a tail.

Asteroid
Asteroids are again small solar system bodies that orbit the Sun. Asteroids contain organic compounds and are made of rock and metal. They are similar to comets but do not have a visible coma (fuzzy outline and tail) like comets do.

Meteoroid
A meteoroid is a small rock or particle of debris in our solar system. They vary in size from dust to around 15 meters in diameter. If such objects are larger they are usually called as asteroids.

Meteor
It is also known as a shooting star, meteors are the Meteoroid bodies that burn up as it passes through the Earth’s atmosphere. If you’ve ever looked up at the sky at night and seen a streak of light or ‘shooting star’ what you are actually seeing is a meteor.

Meteorite
A meteoroid that survives falling through the Earth’s atmosphere and colliding with the Earth’s surface is known as a meteorite.
