Comparison and Difference between Compass and Plane Table Survey

  • The branch of surveying in which directions of survey lines are determined by a compass and their lengths by chaining or taping is called as compass surveying. The plane table is an installment used for surveying by a graphical method in which the field work and plotting are done simultaneously.
  • Compass Survey is used for large mapping while Plane table survey is suitable for small and medium scale mapping.
  • In the first, the topographical features of terrain are not clear while in the other topographical features are mapped and are in full view.
  • Compass survey takes more time in surveying and its mapping. Plane table consumes less time in surveying and its mapping.
