Mode of transmission explains about the direction of the signal which flows between the two linked devices. Data Communication channels are of three types namely Simplex, half duplex and full duplex transmission. Simplex Transmission: Data in a simplex channel is always one way. Simplex channels are not often used because it is not possible to send back error or control signals to the transmit end. An example of a simplex channel is an interface between keyboard and the computer system. When a key is pressed, related key code data is transmitted to computer to function accordingly.
Half Duplex Transmission: In this mode, both station can act as a transmitter and receiver but not at the same time. A half duplex channel can send and receive, but not at the same time. Its like a one-lane bridge where two way traffic must give way in order to cross. Only one end transmits at a time, the other end receives. Example: Walkie Talkie.
Full Duplex Transmission: In this mode, signal can travel in both the directions and at the same time by sharing the capacity of the link. There is no need to switch from transmit to receive mode like in half duplex. Its like a two lane bridge on a two-lane highway. Example: Transmission of data between two computers.
