Differences Between FMS and FMC

Distinguish, differentiate, compare and explain what is the main differences between FMS and FMC.

What is FMS?

A flexible manufacturing system is a highly automated GT machine cell, consisting of a group of processing workstations, interconnected by an automated material handling and storage system, and controlled by a distributed computer system. FMS is called flexible because it is capable of processing a variety of different part styles simultaneously at the various workstations, and the mix of part styles and quantities of production can be adjusted in response to changing demand patterns.

Differences Between FMS and FMC

1. FMS has four or more machines. FMC has two or three machines.

2. FMS is larger and more sophisticated computer control system. FMC is a simpler computer control system.

3. FMS has minimized the effect of machine breakdowns. FMC has limited error recovery by fewer machines.
